On Monday 25th July, our trainers, Steve and Belinda, had a fantastic morning at The Warwickshire Wildlife Trust’s picturesque Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve.
They shared their knowledge and experience in paediatric first aid with parents, grandparents and carers of under-5 as part of our Child Safety First campaign, held in association with our official charity partner, Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Attendees had the opportunity to practice key first aid skills such as CPR on dummies, learning the difference in techniques for different age groups, as well as ask our experienced trainers for their advice on potential risks such as fever and burns.
The feedback we received from the workshop was fantastic yet again, with particular praise for our knowledgeable and experienced trainers.
It was great to have the opportunity to speak to those in attendance and hear their thoughts, such as Vicky Gilbert, 71, a grandmother from Burbage in Leicestershire, who attended the first aid workshop at Brandon Marsh.
She said: “I found out about the campaign and the workshop through my friend, who also came along today, and we thought it was a really worthwhile way to learn about these vital, life-saving skills.
“The practical experience we have had today, including performing CPR on dummies of both infants and older children and learning how to apply a sling to stop bleeding, really reinforces the teaching that we have had and I would feel a lot more confident in delivering first aid in an emergency situation if I ever needed to. I have two grandchildren myself, a seven-year-old and a new-born, so learning both sets of skills for different ages has been brilliant.
“Overall, the experience I have had today has been invaluable. The trainers were very helpful and I believe sessions such as these should be held more regularly for the general public, in venues such as community centres and both primary and secondary schools to educate older children too.
We hope that through these workshops and our free paediatric first aid guide, thousands of additional adults will be equipped, knowledgeable and confident in delivering the right treatment should the situation ever arise, potentially saving several lives every year.
We will be at Kingsbury Water Park Family Fun Day on Sunday 4th September and look forward to seeing many more people there and sharing our industry knowledge with families across the West Midlands.
